Day 13: The Final Sprint to the finish line

Proof that my character made it ;)

Proof that my character made it 😉

My name is Markus Plexius, and I have plex’ed in 21 days . (I’ve not used the plex yet, I’ll transfer it to my main and use it for another project on this website).

I took a day off from exploration to explore the real world a little, on my return to eve I was well rested and ready for the final push. Due to the very quiet nature of the area I was in it was mostly plain sailing.

I gradually increase my holding up to 180m at which point I know, if I can get this haul home I’m all set for the plex… so I decided to try something.

There have been many occasions where I’ve not been able to scan down a particular site no matter how hard I tried, so I decided to bring my cloaky mains Anathema over to try to scan down the site, to see what valuables might be contained within. So I scan down the site with ease, and warp the squad to the location, leaving my main cloaked…. but there is a problem….. we arent the only ones in system.

So while I have my main safely cloaked away in the Relic Site, I have my other toon burn to the first site, and rapidly start accessing the mini game…. the other ship in system is a Tech 2 scanning ship… he finds the site we are in…..he burns his way to Markus….. now the idea all along had been not to receive help from my other toons… so if this gets ugly I’m going to have to let party happen without intervention :(…..

The other pilot is in a T2 Covert Ops Frigate, if it has a Cloak and a probe launcher, then it will only have space for 1 weapon so I dont actually expect much to happen… I may spoken too soon. I’m locked… and scrammed… and he is flinging missles in my direction 80 dmg OUCH! my ability to tank is tiny, so I decide to bug out, luckily his scram isnt enough to over power my Stabilizers but for a moment I was afraid.. losing another 180m would not have been fun.

I then head back to High Sec via a wormhole, and unfortunately for this blog uneventful.

Once back in high sec I head to JITA to sell my wares, this time using the market to sell for the best price by setting up buy orders, I dont get the money instantly but I get much more than if I had gone for the instant win.

I come back the following morning to find myself 10 million short of the plex, so most of my sell orders had been fulfilled. I still have in the region of 20 million yet to sell, so I look into how much I can get an instant rates. Luckily for me I’m only losing around 40% of the value. So I sell up my holdings and get the plex.

So for all the trials and tribulations I’ve experienced over the last 13 days or so, I’m still in high spirits but a little underwhelmed by the surgical nature of its conclusion, but at least now I can say I’ve explored Null Sec with paper armor and lived enough times to have made a profit 😉

Day 11

I’ll admit that these losses are starting to get to me, perhaps the biggest issue is the wasted hours. At the weekend I lost 20 hours of profit. Ho hum risk vs reward yada yada.

So again I’m back in Null Sec being ultra cautious.. I’ll try to cover what I’m doing to be cautious.

Before I jump through a series of system I’ll use the Star Map Statistic functions to address; How many people are in the systems(average for last 30 minutes), how many player ships destroyed in the system within hour/24 hours, how many NPC have been destroyed, etc etc this is to try to form an idea of the risks involved in jumping into that system, am I going to hit a gate camp, am I exposing myself to PVPers.

When I’m in system and its not empty I will check the user name against a Killmail site online to see what ships they are using recently and what kind of threat they pose. Character age and habits can also be gleaned from this information.

Additionally I will be doing a 360 degree D-Scan at max distance, I’m looking for ship hulls and probes that arent mine, different ship hulls have different threat levels, so know what you are looking at (get used to knowing what the different ships are capable of).

When I enter a system I intend to scan down I will also jump to a random celestial and then burn away from it, so that if someone tries to follow me I’ll be several hundred km for where they warp in.

I took it very slow and easy, doing safe log offs if I expected a local contact to be aggressive, and skirting around the edge of regions rather than dive through the centre.

Income was steady but unexciting.

Day 10

Today’s sites were very very slow 😦 I was having difficulty scanning down a few sites, I found out that in order to scan down all sites you need almost 80 scan strength on your ship. mine was around 68, so a little way to go. NO amount of wiggling would get me to 100%.

Took me an hour to get out to Null, then my slow earnings were 40m for the first hour and 20m for the second, this was mostly due to lack of sites, and my inability to scan down the ones I found.

As I was floating down a tunnel of systems where each only linked to the next in the chain, I was ultra cautious around a faction frigate…. as I jump to the next gate the Frigate passes me in warp. the gate is empty as I arrive and the next system loads….. then all hell breaks loose. On the other side was the Faction Frigate and some friends, I see an Interdictor bubble surround me and 5 Frigate and Destroyer class ship attempt to lock me… I need options.

I can either burn out of the bubble and hope I’m not webbed and scrammed too much, or I can turn around and burn back to the gate… seeing as it was an Interdictor bubble and they can just fire another at me so I burned back to the gate full afterburner, my shields 60% depleted I jump systems “good choice Markus” but my celebrations were short lived 5 more ships decloak in front of me bubble me a pummel the crap out of me and my pod…. scratch Magnate number 5.

I’m still losing ships…. but getting better at avoiding certain patterns.

With the overall rate of earnings being low I decide to call it a night and charge in with renewed vigor tomorrow.

Day 9 part ii

I spent much of Day 9 either at work, or working on this Blog, I really need a better avenue for advertising it, feel free to add a comment with suggestions.

And now on with the show, so I’ve got around 200million to make, and I’m still milling around in JITA. I’m watching local a little bored and zoned out, and notice someone states “First person to chat this (some random odd arrow characters) gets 1m isk”, now I have no problem with these sorts of things and my hand/eye coordination and short cut key usage is well trained and I paste the required text in short order….. and then my wallet blinks!

Oh Crap… this isnt supposed to happen on this account !! no scams and no assistance!! OH NOES

It turns out the wallet blinked for 10m not 1m, he’d put an extra zero on the end…..

I then chat him and mention that I’ll need to donate the money, and I mentioned my Blog, he asked how much I had, I told him 375 mill, and then my wallet blinks!!! for 200 MILLION isk GOD DAMMIT, I then complain profusely I tell him thats not the way I wanted this character to roll. So I try to transfer it back to him…..but its a trial account, I cant *FUMES* …. one Support Ticket later all is right with the world (Yes the GMs returned the funds quite happily).

This isnt the first time I’ve been offered cash just to plex the account, but the whole point was to earn it myself, so I’ve sent them packing.  So if you see an odd transaction or 4 in the account, thats where the money came and went from.

Now back to the exploration. Sometimes its not a straightforward thing to go from High Sec to Null Sec… today was one of those days. I managed to go from Jita to Dodixie in 5 jumps with lots of scanning in between… there were just no other wormhole exits other than 2 High Sec portals 😦 So I move over a few systems and try again, there is potentially some activity in this new hole so I’m very cautious and take my time ensuring I’m safe.

Finally an hour later I’m in Null, Thukker Tribe area. I’m so close to my goal that I take extra precautions and avoid busier systems I only need to make 200m and then I’m done. I come across a Relic site in a very empty system… but try as I might I cannot get the warp to 😦 95.8 was the highest I got, I was moving those probes individually all over the place 😦 after maybe 20 minutes of trying I give up and move over, 90 minutes down and zero income, not good.  A few more systems down I find a site where I extract 40m in goods, and then another hour passes pickings are slim and the takings seem to have dropped off 60m haul and getting a little tired. Lets move onto the next system…. ready, aim, JUMP.

“hang on this doesnt look right” as I enter the new system there are a lot of people on gate, its ok they cant see me, I’m cloaked… but they know that I just entered the system at one of the gates… ok there is no warp disruptor up, I just need to pick the I’m nearly align to and jump.. decloaked… aligning… targetted…. WHOOSH! no no thats not the sound of my warp engaging… that was the sound of having a Warp Disruption bubble FIRED at me!!!!  (Interdictors are the shiptype that can fire these) no escaping that one… warp bubbled, warpscrammed, webbed, neuted and shot to hell…. no escape from this. and the guys took FOREVER to pop the pod 😦

I’m not sure there is anything I could have done here, except maybe turn around and head back for the gate I was at, with afterburner blaring, a little shocked and stunned so lost valuable seconds.

All I had to show for 3 hours work was a 65million isk kill mail, such is life/death and EvE 🙂

I’m still on track for the plex so its all good.

Day 9 Part i

After the horrendous events of the weekend, I should perhaps add a glimmer of hope to all those following my blog

Ok midnight has hit so technically its Day 9, double espresso and I’m good to go. This time I get rid of the Nano’s and just go with FOUR Web Stabilzers. I REALLY want to be able to escape this time, also a point to note, I have seen warpdisruption bubbles, but they have not been manned. So I’ve just breezed through, it did get a little hairy with the NPCs on gate, but the afterburner keeps the travel time low and provides some incoming damage mitigation.

So I troop out to Null and end up in ORE faction territory, there is a long deadend chain nearby with very few pilots in space or docked (you can view these statistics in the Star Map) each quiet system I go through, I stop and scan down any sites, Progress today seems very speedy there are lots of Data sites, which is a bit of a pain as I’m more specialised in Relic sites, oh well.

I seemed to get rather lucky cracking open some of the more difficult ones, but the considerable quantity of sites I’m scanning down is certainly helping. Something I’ve now started doing is checking peoples history up on the killmail website, this gives me an indication of how safe I can be.

Net cargo worth ≈ 160m

Hmm now I seem to be most at risk when going through WH space as there is no local to track… I think I’ll just stick around here and fill may cargo…. it seems a nice enough area.

I’d like to point out at this point I’m being ULTRA cautious, if I need a pee break, or a food break, its a full “log out safely” proceedure… I dont want to lose another ship…

My haul continues to grow, as I’m getting LOTS of sites, oddly enough mostly Data so I’m breaking alot of them, 1 system kept spawning them, did around 5 of them in short order (they actually respawned as I emptied them)

Oh Crap Haul value … 300mil I think its time to go home.

Luckily for me its 8am in the morning when I do this jump (yay 4 hours sleep) and all seems very quiet… a little too quiet…

I get a wormhole exit to lowsec… here we go again…. hmm 9 jumps to a Trade Hub… 4 jumps of lowsec, but I feel empowered i have FOUR warp stabilzers on my ship, RUN RABBIT RUN!!!! I burn to the nearest gate and immediately jump…. I fly to the next one and its a little slow to acknowledge the zone change.. I click furiously on the jump button, Jump dammit jump there are ships here and they dont look friendly LEMME IN!!! finally the gate gives up and lets me jump… phew only 2 more jumps to relative safety….

Its worth pointing out at this point…. I have a cargo worth 300m…. I’m in a paper thin flying coffin… if I’m locked and scanned by a suicide ganker they WILL execute me, and it will cost them a couple of mill…

Heart still racing a bit… I have half a plex worth in my hold…..1 jump to goooo…. FREEEEEEDDOOOOOM

Ok concentrate now, its high sec but its still not safe, I continue manually piloting to my destination (Auto-pilot WILL get you killed at some point) and then I arrive… but wait! I know have another form of PvP to contend with THE DAMN MARKETS!!!!!

Ok perhaps slightly overdramatic, but on reviewing Amarr prices and JITA prices… I’m better off going Jita for faster cash… and it IS worth it to make the trip, its like a good 15-20% increase on my haul.

This pretty much brings us to the end of Day 9 part i, this was the morning before work, so I suspect I may be able to get out a little this evening and earn the last couple of hundred mill I need.

Day 7 & 8

This post covers my weekend, so it will be a little on the large side, TLDR is at the bottom.

Day 7

So welcome to my weekend, day 6 didn’t happen as I had other real-life events to attend to, it was a Friday night after all. All my training was pre-scheduled to last until the weekend anyhow.

Last time I left off I had just returned from Null with my spoils 🙂 to the tune of 120m or so once sold. Now that’s what I like to see. Now regards the ship I want to do a little switcharoo with the rigs, dropping the scanning rigs and fitting relic/data ones instead. Sure it will take me a little longer to scan down the sites, but IN the sites is where the money is made and lost, and I’m popping and losing quite a few containers.

So with my ship newly refitted, and some new implants in my head to the tune of 20 million (hey I can afford it) to increase the speed I learn the skills I need, I head back into null.

Net worth ≈ 160m

Things are a little slow going as the systems are mostly devoid of exploration sites, but with enough dedication I keep going and amass a cargo haul approaching 130m, this is going great, its taking its time, but it appears to be a solid income. I do the usual of finding a wormhole home, and scan my way back towards High sec…….

Net worth ≈ 300m          *half a plex, joy, joy, happy, happy.*

Instead of popping out into High sec, I find a lowsec exit 7 jumps from a Trade hub, and 4 jumps until High Sec. 1 jump later I hit a quiet system with LOTS of Signatures to scan down, OH BOY OH BOY, my lucky day so I settle into my usual routine, jump to a planet @ 100km burn away from it, start scanning. Yay a data sight, I continue scanning until I’ve scanned all 8, boo a combat site, yay a relic sight, BOOM what the hell was that… erm erm ship gone… erm erm warp to nearest gate , phew I got away. http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=20678308

Net worth ≈ 120m      *sad face*

I had a little chat with the guy/girl that popped my ship, they were flying a Insta-locking Loki, and my frail old ship was no match, he is 100m richer, I’m considerably poorer. Basically I had made it much too easy for him to find me, I stayed too long, and I wasnt paying enough attention, lesson learned.

Ok, new ship time, dammit Magnate at normal price is 5 jumps away, meh I’ll just take this Sarum Magnate, at 3 times the price instead, cos its shiny 🙂 (Hey I can still afford a few luxuries). Now I’d like to point out at this point I fit 2 Warp stabilzers to my ship, so that the would need a at least 3 points of warp scram to stop me warping( Scram x2, or Scram + disruptor). I then head back into WH Space to get back to Null and earning my living, cue the ominous music.

Net worth ≈ 100m *Grumpy Face*

What happened you might ask… weeeellll I was scanning my way back through to null, jump into a wormhole and then another, quite a relaxing trip actually, doing a little sight seeing….. erm Whats an Archon? oh its a big sodding ship that hurts things…. ok shhh I’m not here, erm whats a Moros, dont worry thats just a Dreadnought… erm ok! I had only seen these things on d-scan, but I was suitably concerned. Ok lets get out of here sharpish in case they are active. Ok scanned down a wormhole, jumping. Wait wait! there are people at this one, a Buzzard and a damn Loki. Ok calm down I got this, jump to planet xyz, Frigate has me locked by now. Erm computer I said jump to planet xyz, computer:“I’m sorry you appear to be warp scrambled”, “hey computer I fitted these damn warp scrams for a reason”, computer:“I’m sorry, they are no match for my systems, Good Bye”, And then the ship explodes… hmm I’m in WH space with no idea where to go. “YOU MAY TAKE MY SHIP, BUT YOU’LL NEVER TAKE MY…..”. (I chatted the pilot of the buzzard, he had no less than SIX points of warpscram on me)

You awake in a new clone. Ship gone, implants gone, hmm maybe I should have gone to bed earlier…..

Day 8

*Shakes fist at PvP players everywhere*  I will not be stopped I will get my plex!!!

I take my time fitting out the ship, make the jumps for the good deal on the large price tag items, fully fitted its about 7million. I lost the implants, so I pop a couple more back in. And then head out on the lonely road to Null (Or at least the road less travelled) I also completely sell up all of my other assets, save the Rigged Coercer, I dont expect I’ll be doing combat missions anytime soon. This is much too lucrative, even with the losses.

Net worth ≈ 80m (I’m not considering implants as assets, I cant sell them, nor take them out of my head to reuse)

New ship, new day, lets get it ON!

Today I take it much more cautiously, if the system is busy I just move on, its not worth the risk. Due to my increased risk aversion pickings are a little slim…. add the fact I cant seem to find many sites… over the course of the day I gradually raise my haul to around 160 million… but as always something happens….

so there are 2 people in system, I merely but cautiously start scanning, a Relic site pops up, and another, rest of the signatures are trash. Hmm I see double the number of probes on d-scan… need to be careful. I jump to site 1, afterburner on, and head to the nearest one, crap crap, a Helios turns up in the site. I jump to the 2nd site. Erm the Helios is here too, let me just find out what a Helios is. AHHH its a Covert Ops ship, a sneaky little ship for doing the same thing I am. ok so I jump back to site 1 and open up a conversation with him. Lets see if I can use a little diplomacy to keep the peace. Hmm his english isnt so great, but I seem to give them impression that he get 1 site I get the other and its all cool.

Net worth ≈ 220m *this is the right direction!*

So i return to  ripping open these containers, while having the conversation on my chat window… a Manticore uncloaks 750m from me while I’m in the middle of hacking CRAPPP!! jump jump jump, dammit computer JUMP  computer:“I’m sorry we’ve already had this conversation, I suspect the outcome is the same, good bye Capsuleer” I keep clicking to jump while my ship explodes….

But hang on a minute I’m 80 jumps from a Trade hub in hostile territory…. *Sets self destruct*  computer:“you have 2 minutes remaining, before your capsule implodes”

computer:“You have 5 seconds remaining before your capsule implodes, I hope you enjoyed your stay”

You awake in a new clone. Ship gone, implants gone, hmm maybe I should have gone to bed earlier…..

The mistake I made this time, was that I have shifted over to the conversation, and I was no longer tracking local…

Day 4

Isn’t it frustrating that real life can have such a large effect on your virtual self!! Wasn’t in the best of moods thus my productivity was low, couple that with waiting for 90 minutes of an important skill to tick down. Yuck. So I logged off and let Drone IV and salvage drone I complete and made myself useful…. Losing 170mil on my main in stupid station games while wardec’ed. Note to self don’t pop in a bad mood.
I had planned to clear out a few missions and the salvage the remains, The destroyer STILL can’t handle level 2s very well. I persevered but this made completion times loooong. After an hour and a half, 5 missions down… Salvage and loot amounted to a couple of million. Isk per hour is poor but at least net worth heading in the right direction.
As discussed previously I keep getting recommended to try null/low sec exploration, so I spend the next hour or so gathering parts and fitting my ship. Cue the Magnate this truly is one of favourite hulls from a visual perspective, vaguely reminiscent of Boba Fetts ship(I’ll probably get a bounty on my head for such vile heresy). I pile on the Hacking and Relic modules, the scan strength rigs, and 2 stabs to aid getting away from warp scrams. For launcher I go with the freebie one, but for probes I stump up the extra for sisters probes. It’s 4 million for a 10% boost, so pushing the value to around 5.5 million, yeah I can replace that gulp.
I tried desperately to fit an afterburner, but my skills and funds just don’t allow it, so I roll my eyes and scrounge around for something useful. Inertia stabilisers for faster aligns, and 2 small containers to hold all the loot.

Undock let the scanning begin.

I’m running out of playtime before bed so decide to commit to wormhole space before getting shut eye. Scanning down in high sec is considerably easier than WH Space, soooo glad I went for Sisters Probes, if I survive the trip i’ll have to fit a module to aid with that. 2 wormholes in I decide to dash for bed, tomorrow I can briefly explore the trap I have entered.

Day 3

Being social with corp mates certainly drops the isk per hour ratio, but I’m gaming not working :-).

Today was fairly slow going due to the nature of the missions I was running. Sure level 1 missions are very easy in a destroyer, but the income sucks. I felt the need to get more value for each mission run so I had been ramping up to salvage my own wrecks, I’ve bought and fitted a Dragoon for this purpose. I picked this one due to the speed bonus of the drones, I should be getting the salvager versions by tomorrow.

My Dragoon is fitted with 3 Salvager I and 3 Tractors, I need to find an Afterburner to put on there too.

My Coercer is just fitted with Meta 3 Small Beams, and its very tight on powergrid so I dont have space for anything else. perhaps I should resort to using Dual Beams instead, at least that way I can fit a tank and afterburner.

So half my accumulated assets are locked up in the above Destroyers, whereas the other half in an Omen. Tomorrow I’ll have to attempt some of the harder level 2’s if this proves fruitless I’ll liquidate the Omen.

The more and more I experience the standard missions the less and less likely I feel I can plex off them, the income just doesnt seem to be there. Perhaps now I have the salvager setup and more skills in the Omen they might turn a tidy profit, otherwise I’ll head off to null for the weekend and do exploration.

Reflections on Day Two

Perhaps I was a wee bit hasty in more ways than one, by completing all three sets of Amarrian Career missions I had sufficient standings to go directly into level 2. While I have the confidence for them I was over-confident and also misread my skills… Just because I set it training before bed does NOT mean that it will have completed before the next evening…
I entered with the Omen thinking I had Amarr Cruiser III, but it was actually at 1, medium laser were also at 2 not 3. My tank and fitting skill non-existent,

A Heavy Beam fit might also have been a bad idea….. I’m plagued with belief in ability associated with a high-level character.

The Destroyer however was a dream for the frigate filled Career missions, so popping back into Level1 missions I should encounter similar resistance (or lack there of). I was sufficiently blasé in that my lows consisted of 2 speed mods and a meta 3 small repper, my mid ans afterburner only…… how not to run missions as a new toon!

For the next runs in the destroyer I’ll slide in the full complement of guns, crystals, afterburner, cap recharger, rat specific hardeners , small repper and a partridge in a peartree. Running only Level 1 missions until my Cruiser skills mature.

On the topic of skills maturing, I’m starting to notice that time is running exceedingly short, 4 days for Cruiser IV, medium lasers IV is 3 days. I could have T2 small guns and Destroyer IV in that time…

On http://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/ a recurring recommendation is to do Null Sec exploration, apparently its a 2-3 day train. I think day 3 will be a Destroyer day, day 4 a Cruiser day, from there I’ll make a decision for the weekend. Days 5 and 6 will be limited to updating the Training Schedule. Day 7 is Saturday so I’ll have extra time to make a dent in the plex fund, with a new set of skills trained.

Day Two

My first port of call for day two was to complete the final set of Career mission, this time I’m lined up in a 6-8 gun destroyer (depending on the mission I need to fit utility highs) It was an absolute breeze. I now shift my setup to a trade hub, I want cheap prices on my modules, and good returns on loot. I find a nice little station housing 2 level 2 agents and a level 1. I’m all set, so I pick up two level 2 missions, merrily plink away at them then return to the station, and repeat, all is right with the world…

but then….. I hit the proverbial brick wall…..

The Blockade .. dun dun DUUUUN

Now I know this mission well, (eve-survival is your friend if you dont), but I’m used to doing this particular mission in an Assault Frigate with all the faction trimmings, doing it in an underskilled undertanked Destroyer was torture, add in the tracking disruption and I can only hit out to 6km, not good . After many warp outs I decide to upgrade to an Omen, 10 minutes later I’m ready to roll…. but still warping out every 30 seconds, tank and gank just cant cut it… I decide to get some drones on those scum, dammit 15 minute training to get light drones…. several warp outs later, yay drones!…. hmm they arent particular effective……. after much gnashing of teeth, a billion warp outs and a little help from local I’m free and clear…. my collective hull repair bills took a dent out of any earnings from that mission 😦 but its done, and I wont be going back in a hurry.

This just goes to show folks, dont bite off more than you can chew. I need to invest more in the ship and my skills before going up against this again. I think I’ll drop back to easy mode and run some level 1 in a destroyer till my skills train some more.
